September Charity Partner: Jed Foundation

September Charity Partner: Jed Foundation

Who Is the Jed Foundation?

Casely’s charity partner this month is the Jed Foundation (JED), a nonprofit organization with a huge heart. Founded only two years after the loss of their son, Jed, to suicide in 1998, founders Phil and Donna Satow set out on a mission in 2000 to prevent the same thing from happening to other young people.

Turning their grief and son’s memory into a grand force for good, JED is a charity that protects the emotional health of young people and teenagers. It aims to prevent suicide among these age groups by giving them the support and skills they need to thrive, not just for today but for all the days after tomorrow.

JED aims to help young adults and teenagers by:

  • Building resilience and life skills

  • Promoting social connections

  • Encouraging asking for help and help-giving

  • Utilizing nationally recognized programs, digital channels, and media partnerships

  • Working with high schools, colleges, and universities

  • Mobilizing the local communities by offering education and training to families, friends, and others

With a vision to see all young adults and teenagers equipped to navigate their mental health and be there for their peers, JED has already had a significant impact across the nation in the last 25 years, and that impact keeps growing.

What Does the Jed Foundation Do?

1. Strengthening Schools

The Jed Foundation works with schools to equip them with resources to help broaden the understanding of mental health. They also provide mental health education and training and work with schools on a district level to provide better mental health awareness and support systems.

2. Equipping Individuals

Individuals also need to equip themselves with knowledge and tools to navigate mental health ebbs and flows; that’s why JED uses impactful storytelling to help deliver insights and information. Sometimes this comes in the form of content creation campaigns or through digital resources.

3. Mobilizing the Community

After schools and individuals, the community must also be mobilized to keep young adults and teens safe. This manifests through JED-supported legislation and policies, as well as forming coalitions and partnerships to strengthen the good work that can be done by working together across different organizations. Additionally, JED seeks to engage with young people and their voices on their terms.

How Can You Help?

There are many ways you can support JED, starting from today. You can:
