About the V Foundation

In 1993, the world of competitive sports lost a legend with the death of Jim Valvano. The dynamic, Queens-born college basketball coach memorably took the North Carolina State Wolfpack to a shocking NCAA Division 1 win.

He had been sick for years with adenocarcinoma, an aggressive form of cancer. Valvano is remembered today for his unforgettable speech at the 1993 ESPY Awards. He was in the last months of his life, yet with courage and hope, he announced the formation of the V Foundation for Cancer Research.

He gave a directive that has become the organization’s motto: “Don't give up. Don't ever give up." The V Foundation has never given up on its goal and, in the process, has raised millions for research into finding a cure for cancer.

Their Mission

The V Foundation has awarded over $310 million in research grants to find a cure for cancer. These grants support cutting-edge research that has helped the cancer death rate fall 32% between 1991 and 2019. That translates to 3.5 million saved lives.

The V Foundation lives by its mission: Victory Over Cancer®. Inspired by the indomitable spirit of its founder, the V Foundation awards 100% of its direct donations to cancer research and programs. Thanks to generous donors, none of the money given to the V Foundation is used to cover internal administrative expenses.

Funding Research and Saving Lives

The number of cancer survivors in the U.S. has ballooned to 18 million. The V Foundation projects that that number will rise to 22.1 million by 2030.

The V Foundation has directed its funds to the following forms of cancer research:

• Blood Cancer – $61 million (survival rate increased from 33% to 65.7% between 1975 and 2018).
• Breast Cancer – $31 million (death rates have declined 43% between 1989 and 2020).
• Lung Cancer – $26 million (death rates have declined 51% between 1990 and 2017).
• Pediatric Cancer – $67 million (5-year survival rate for children 0-14 has increased 58% from the mid-1970s to 2017).
