August Charity Partner: No Kid Hungry

Millions of kids in America go hungry, and summer break only makes it harder. This August, Casely's #EveryCaseCounts initiative is spotlighting No Kid Hungry, a nonprofit working to make sure hunger never gets in the way of a kid's day. 

Here's who they are, what they do, and how you can pitch in.

What Is No Kid Hungry?

No Kid Hungry is a campaign run by Share Our Strength, a national nonprofit focused on one goal, and that’s ending childhood hunger in America. 

The organization connects kids and families with the meals and food assistance programs they need, whether that's during the school year, over summer break, or right at home. 

No Kid Hungry works through grants and policy advocacy, backed by its own research, to strengthen the systems already in place rather than trying to feed every kid on its own.

What Does No Kid Hungry Do?

The work breaks down into 3 main areas, each targeting a different point where kids can fall through the cracks:

Fueling School Meals

Federal programs cover the cost of school meals, but not always the equipment needed to serve them. No Kid Hungry grants fund things like refrigerators and breakfast carts, and last year alone that added up to more than $25 million, mostly directed at schools. 

That funding has helped an estimated 3 million additional kids eat breakfast before class even starts.

Closing the Summer Gap

Summer is often called the hungriest time of year for kids who lean on school meals the rest of the time. No Kid Hungry helped build out Summer EBT (also known as SUN Bucks) and Sun Meals To-Go, which together could reach as many as 31 million children. 

According to No Kid Hungry, the 2024 rollout of Summer EBT reached an estimated 18 million kids in its very first year.

Supporting Families at Home

No Kid Hungry also works behind the scenes to protect and expand Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) enrollment, partners with pediatricians to screen for food insecurity during routine visits, and equips child care centers to spot families who need help. 

It's less visible work, but it keeps groceries in the fridge long after the school bell stops ringing.

What Can You Do to Get Involved?

You don’t need a big budget or a ton of free time to make a difference. Here are a few ways to jump in: 

• Give What You Can — A donation, big or small, goes straight toward funding these programs. You can donate however much you wish, on a one-off basis, monthly, or yearly. 

• Raise Your Voice — Hungry kids don't have lobbyists. No Kid Hungry's Take Action for Kids initiative makes it simple to contact elected officials and speak up for the programs keeping food on the table.

• Show Up — From Taste of the Nation dinners to shopping with partner brands that donate a portion of sales, there are plenty of low-lift ways to pitch in without writing a check.
